FALL 2010 Programs and Highlights!

Bird-watching Paddle on Maury Lake at the Mariners’ Museum Park in Newport News. 

Saturday September 11 (7:30-9:30 a.m.)  Join us for an early morning paddle to observe and hear many different birds migrating through our local area.  The lake is a beautiful spot to paddle and this is a unique opportunity for those interested in a relaxing morning paddle.  For more info and to register, please contact Ashley Ruhl at the Mariners’ Museum (ARuhl@MarinersMuseum.org).

Explore Fishermans Island and the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge! 

Saturday, October 23 (8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.) Join us for a morning walk/hike on Fishermans island just over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on the Eastern Shore.  This site is not open to the public- a rare opportunity to see fall migration of birds, a beautiful, unspoiled beach habitat and more.  After lunch, the group will paddle through the salt marsh of the National Wildlife Refuge-WOW!  Trip is $95 includes all kayaking equipment, experienced guides and lunch, drinks and snacks.  Participants must provide own transportation to the eastern shore.  For more info and/or to register, contact Jill Bieri at jill@chesapeakeexperience.org or 757-890-0502.


FOR EDUCATORS

Historical and Ecological Perspectives of Jamestown and the Chesapeake Bay

October 8, 2010  (8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) 
Course Description: Explore the connection of history and ecology as it relates to Jamestown and the lower Chesapeake Bay. This course will be taught in partnership with the National Park Service and includes a paddle on Powhatan Creek.
Cost: $15/participant and includes all field equipment, lunch, snacks and experienced staff;  Recertification Credits:  8 hours


Fall Migration and Conservation on the Eastern Shore

October 15-17, 2010  (course begins Friday evening)
Course Description: Explore the Eastern Shore from a totally different perspective! Course includes discussions, kayaking and field experiences that relate migration, conservation, restoration and the settlement and growth of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This course is funded by and taught in partnership with the University of Virginia, ABCRC in Oyster, VA.
Cost: $75/participant and includes experienced staff, all field trips, meals and lodging; Recertification Credits: 16 hours
